they are playing a game. they are playing at not playing a game. if i show them i see they are, i shall break the rules and they will punish me. i must play their game, of not seeing i see the game.
where horses can read human emotions. where rain has a smell before it even arrives and where the ocean can glow in the dark. a planet where the stars we see might not even exist anymore.
in case you forgot: we live on a planet where whales sing songs that travel for miles. where trees can recognise their own offspring and protect them underground. where dolphins give each other names and where lightning can create glass in the sand.
but watch a genuinely good person navigate an actually difficult situation and it is the most intricate, unrepeatable, specifically human thing you will ever witness. goodness is not simple. it is just very very quiet. we misread the quiet as absence.
goodness in fiction is written as the absence of complexity because the writers don't know any genuinely good people. or they do and they can't figure out how to make it interesting on the page.
not all sadness is problematic. some sadness is just the weight of having loved things that ended. carry it. it means you were present for something real. not everything that hurts is broken; not everything that is broken, hurts.
there's a word in urdu; ghamgeen. that means a sadness so old it has become part of your character. english doesn't have it. english wants you to fix sadness, medicate it, five-step your way out of it.
