I enjoy video games. I also enjoy adding to my physical game collection: holding it in my hand, taking in the carefully-designed box art, reserving a space for it on my shelf, getting to look at it anytime without powering on a machine. A digital file is no replacement for that.
@jamm3rd@SHIRO_116 I enjoyed Stellar Blade but man, this is not it. Where's the inspired HUMAN creativity in this? I get it, making a game is hard, but it's the HUMAN effort that matters, the HUMAN effort that shines through in the end, the HUMAN effort that draws us to things. Not this AI garbage.
@PlayStation This is someone who clearly has never played a physical video game, has no sentimentality towards physical media, and strictly went to business school just to get a cushy job making tons of money however possible. Completely out of touch. #NoDiscNoBuy#PhysicalForever

@PlayStation You know what we Don't Like? Not having a choice to buy physical games on platforms we've bought for just that reason. This is why CEOs of companies should have an actual passion for what their company does, not just see everything as cut-and-dry business for profit. #NoDiscNoBuy
@PlayStation Sony's stance hasn't changed, and neither has ours. Blu-ray movies are still produced, music CDs and vinyl are still produced, knowing there is a hobbyist market out there for them. There is no excuse for physical video games to completely go away. #NoDiscNoBuy#ForeverPhysical
@PlayStation I can use my real money to experience countless worlds through means that allow me to have full, indisputable ownership of physical things. If I want to experience a game digital-only, I'll watch a Let's Play and save my money. 😁💰 #NoDiscNoBuy#PhysicalForever
@PlayStation There's an obvious joke here that I could make tying Playstation and Dragon Ball, but I'm above that. Too bad Sony heads aren't above abandoning consumers, seeing things for anything other than pure, selfish profit. Hard pass here. #NoDiscNoBuy#PhysicalForever
@PlayStation Playstation being SILENT about the matter at hand and willing to die on the HILL of bad, late-stage capitalist, anti-consumer decisions will certainly go down in history as one of the most deserved crash-and-burn ENDINGS in entertainment history. #NoDiscNoBuy#PhysicalForever
@PlayStation Croc is a pretty cool little series. Still have my PHYSICAL PS1 copies of both 1 & 2. And when the time is right, I will gladly check these out by buying PHYSICAL on Switch. #NoDiscNoBuy#PhysicalForever
@PlayStation The most villainous team right now rests within your headquarters, Sony. It's a shame, too. I'm sure many people there are actually decent folk. The ones making the big decisions, however, tell a much different story. #NoDiscNoBuy#PhysicalForever
@PlayStation Uncover Sony's lies about the true split between physical and digital sales in: The Internet Exists - And The Truth Is There For All To See. Available now in your web browser! #NoDiscNoBuy#PhysicalForever
Capcom Q1 results are in and everybody talks about how 93 % of all sold units are digital. So here we go again and take the closer look almost nobody else will. You will love this!
Remember, Sony was arguing their attack on physical media is based on shifting consumer trends. Surely Capcom will support that, right?
Or maybe not.
First of all, the digital-physical split includes PC games. 100 % digital with not other choice for the customer. That's over 60 percentage points of the 93 %. To check consumer preference, we can disregard this portion entirely.
Just comparing console games we are looking at 17 % physical. Yeah, still not great, but still far from "physical is dead". How did this number come about, though?
First we need to factor in digital games that ...
... might not be available physically in certain regions (or only in limited stores that do imports).
... didn't even have physical releases in the first place, like Monster Hunter Rise on PlayStation, e.g.
Those are in the digital tally without an option for the consumer. Not qualified to make a statement about preference.
Another big factor is what types of games were sold in Q1 2026. Almost 90 % of all sold games are so-called "catalog units". Older games, which might not be available in retail anymore due to being sold out. Add to that that those often land in digital sales with heavy discounts, so if people shop for something online, they might be lured in to get the game that way. At least debatable whether that is actual preference. We'd argue against it.
Then we need to look at which and how many new games came out. The Q1 2026 report banks primarily on Pragmata and Devil May Cry 5: Devil Hunter Edition according to Capcom. Not a lot.
So while physical is obviously still the minority, it still doesn't support all the doomerism. And we have one more stat in the report to prove that, especially given that the other quarters for comparison had more games released: Year on year growth in physical units sold.
The data shows that Capcom sold 1,3 million physical units in the same quarter in 2022 (only new game was Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak). 1,9 million in 2023. Then a big drop to 700k in 2024 and another to 680k in their 2025 fiscal year. What does their current fiscal year report show for this past quarter in 2026?
1,59 million units sold!
The second highest year for Q1 in the past 5 years and a year on year growth of 133,8 % for this quarter.
If you look at this data, it is obviously not meant to claim everybody plays physical. But our analysis should show you that everybody just going with the 93 % is not telling the full picture, once again. So please be aware of that.
@PlayStation Announce whatever you want, skew all the data you want, present whatever narrative you want, pay off whoever you want to share that narrative, it's plain and simple: give us the option for physical games. You got any more in you today? I know I do. #NoDiscNoBuy#PhyiscalForever
@PlayStation You want to sell a service thinking you're the modern version of Blockbuster. The key difference here? Blockbuster gave us physical media to enjoy for the rental period, which created special connections to movies and games that digital files cannot. #NoDiscNoBuy#PhysicalForever
@PlayStation The only slam dunk on the horizon would be the resurgence of physical media and the guarantee of permanent game ownership upon purchase. Since you don't want to do either, I'll assume you just want to emulate Shaq at the free throw line. (Sorry Shaq) #NoDiscNoBuy#PhysicalForever
@PlayStation I have a strong enough soul to fight for myself, thanks. Especially if physical media stops being an option. The only industry that would even consider doing such a foolish thing is the one that is already in mid-collapse and won't admit it. #NoDiscNoBuy#PhysicalForever
