Challenging the Outdoor Industry and Adventure Travelers to Remember that #PublicLand is #Native. @joewhitson (Non-Native - See link for more about who I am)
If we want to really address vandalism and misuse of outdoor spaces, the solution isn’t to stop #geotagging - which is just gatekeeping - it is to radically shift tourists' understanding of the history and culture of these places and realign their relationship to them.
Rep. Deb Haaland: “This moment is profound when we consider the fact that a former secretary of the Interior once proclaimed his goal to 'civilize or exterminate' us. I’m a living testament to the failure of that horrific ideology.” https://t.co/ZIl1vOmfpE
The Department of the Interior has historically been at the forefront of American settler colonialism. Obviously, there is only so much we can do working within its existing structure, but putting Haaland at the helm is an incredibly important step in the right direction.
Rep. Deb Haaland, Biden’s pick for interior secretary, would be the first Native American Cabinet secretary if confirmed by the Senate.
“I’ll be fierce for all of us, for our planet and all of our protected land,” she says. https://t.co/vykapyF53L
@hcmaruyama @edgeeffectsmag@JesseRitner8 The rhetoric of "our" land upon which the public land system is built is inherently colonial because it doesn't acknowledge the intrinsic value and agency of land with which a reciprocal rather than extractive relationship must be formed.
@John_A_Little Um, universities switching students to total online learning, gutting adjunct employment, and still raising tuitions seems like a pretty clever new trick to me, John.
I’ve been waiting to share my book cover (I took the cover photo on a research trip) until it was available for pre-order. Well, looks like today’s the day! @uncpressblog @MarkSV

We’re reading “The West” out of @AmericanYawp for my class on American empire today. One of my students called Manifest Destiny “the worst kind of manspreading” and I AM HERE FOR IT.

F cancel culture; it is a distraction from the true exclusion produced by the nation-state: cancelled passports, subjects, cancelled boyhoods, girlhoods, childhoods of Black citizens around the globe. This is my grandfather in the midst of Chinese Exclusion in 1934. 🇯🇲
Who are Native voices we should all be listening to? (I’m looking for ones without large platforms or followings)
I see so many powerful youth voices in particular & we so often give the same big voices the stage. Who are you? What’s your positionality? Introduce yourself.
How did I miss this intrepid reporting on the George Floyd protests from the Thai Enquirer?
“Unrest and protests continued for a seventh straight day in the former British colony of the United States...”

What about Mount Rushmore? Give the land back you stole. Let the Lakota and Dakota people, as well as the 50+ Indigenous nations who have ties to the place, decide what to do with this monstrosity. It's called Indigenous self-determination and sovereignty.
Teddy Roosevelt statue in front of the NY Natural History Museum. Dressed as a hunter, he flanked by the "pacified" American Indian and African. Reminder that for TR, environmental #conservation was explicitly connected to race and white supremacy. #PublicLands
We need to have a conversation not just about Roosevelt, but about how our system of national parks and forests we all love is based on the theft of Indigenous land.

Minneapolice aren’t news to the Native community there. Famous story of officers carrying two Native men around the city in the trunk of their car. Indian Movement Patrol (AIM Patrol) was a citizens’ patrol created in response to police brutality in 1968. https://t.co/7KxZBBVOl0
