I believe one of the biggest threats to feminism today is a new form of pickmeism that presents itself as feminism.

Instead of centering women’s interests, autonomy, boundaries, and spaces, it prioritizes certain groups of men because those men are seen as marginalized in other ways. It then uses feminist talking points to pressure or shame women for having sexual boundaries, dating preferences, or other personal choices, rather than defending women’s right to make those choices freely.

I’ve also seen this rhetoric used to justify encroaching on women’s spaces and to decenter women in conversations that are primarily about women’s experiences and rights.

What makes this trend more concerning than traditional pickmeism is that it comes wrapped in feminist language. Because it sounds progressive, it’s often harder to recognize and harder to challenge. The consequences don’t always appear immediately, you often notice them only after the ideas have started influencing how people think about women’s boundaries, women’s spaces, and women’s autonomy.

If we’re not willing to question these arguments, I worry that they could gradually undermine hard-won gains that generations of feminists fought to achieve. Feminism should remain centered on protecting women’s rights and autonomy, not on using feminist rhetoric to persuade women to compromise them.

Since 2000, there have been 11 trans-identifying homicide victims in the UK. All but one were personal-cause killings, and had nothing to do with the fact that they identified as transgender.

In the same amount of time, 20 trans-identifying people have been convicted of homicide. They have killed husbands, wives, parents, grandparents, neighbors, friends, and total strangers. All but one of them were male.

The personal safety of women and girls is largely built upon the existence of single-sex spaces. The men demanding entry are not fragile, vulnerable flowers. They are men — dangerous, predatory men who are absolutely obsessed with gaining access to the places where women and girls are most vulnerable.

Ask yourself why.
