Reflecting on the tragedy in Gaza, I’m reminded of Geoffrey Hinton’s call for “maternal instincts” in AI. If humans, who are naturally gifted with emotions and empathy, can still cause such pain, how much greater could the risk be if AI surpasses human intelligence but lacks empathy? Superintelligent AI needs more than efficiency—it needs a heart. Building emotional intelligence and a shared sense of destiny into AI isn’t just important, it’s essential for a peaceful, compassionate future.
