No one in Indonesia would have imagined that a few years ago, there was a player in Nijmegen named Calvin Verdonk — a footballer with Acehnese roots. Not only is his heritage special, but so are his skills. His performances have been remarkably consistent, both for his club and for Timnas Indonesia.

When he chose to represent Timnas Indonesia, he sacrificed more than a passport. With his outstanding form for one of France’s top clubs, LOSC Lille, it’s not impossible that he also sacrificed his chance to play for the Netherlands. Given his level today, had he not chosen Indonesia, a call-up to The Oranje could have been within reach.

But in the end, we all know what Calvin Verdonk decided. The people of this country will never forget the sight of him running until he could barely walk at Gelora Bung Karno, when Timnas defeated Saudi Arabia. Through talent and relentless hard work, Idzes managed to reach a much higher level in Serie A. His impressive performances even attracted interest from several top clubs in Italy. Now with Sassuolo, Idzes is not just another player in the squad. He has become one of the team’s most important figures.

For Timnas Indonesia, his performances, leadership, and dedication to the national team have never been in question.

It is almost unimaginable for any player from Indonesia or even from the wider ASEAN region to come close to what Idzes has achieved.
