I'm here again, 8 months later, to tell you that Ariana Grande is in a very grave place & she's going to die unless someone in her circle decides that she's worth more to them in Recovery than she is as a superstar brand who employs them.
We who survived our eating disorders can see this plain as day & the grace by which we survived requires that we loudly say something.
It’s so crazy that celebrities are being like “Ariana Grande doesn’t have an eating disorder, she’s a talented singer and a nice person!” and like, sorry to break it to you, but talented singers and nice people can have eating disorders too!!!!
People shutting down discussions of eating disorders with accusations of body shaming is genuinely so insidious. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, and mainstream media outlets are using progressive language in an attempt to normalise it.
just read a fic that i enjoyed so i clicked on the author’s profile only to see “used to be [beloved author who i watched delete their acc & orphan all their works years ago]” in their bio when i tell you i SCREAMED. i can’t believe they came back to me pls never leave me again😭
One very difficult thing about anorexia is that those in it genuinely do see themselves as superior to healthy women. This reality makes the condition treatment-resistant—why would you want to be like these inferiors?—but it also hurts and alienates the sufferer’s loved ones.
can't talk abt dangers of pregnancy can't talk abt someone obviously starving themselves can't talk abt casual fatphobia can't talk abt patriarchal and pedophilic input on beauty standards can't talk abt tradwife values poisoning women what the hell are we supposed to do
The tricky thing about anorexia is that if you have it, you’re proud of it & want to be the best at it & you will interpret other people’s concern as disingenuous meddling born of envy, which will only induce you to double down on your own “choices” because it’s all about control
whether or not i think public outcry is even remotely capable of making a person with an eating disorder get help aside… i will reject the cultural shift towards emaciated thin at every turn. if you take that personally as someone that is losing weight i apologize i guess
@billyburke87 @hatsune_mitski someone just existing in a skinny body and someone posting a video/picture or wearing clothing specifically to highlight bones that are sticking out, sunken in parts, etc.
@billyburke87 @hatsune_mitski Thanks for being open to a dialogue! Bodychecking is a more modern term that refers to a person (either online or in person) showing off their body for the purpose of highlighting their skinniness. There’s some grey area there, but generally there’s a difference between 1/2
@hatsune_mitski i think the break will be best both so that people in her life can hopefully get her help, and also so that this kind of suffering is not placed on a stage/big screen for others to watch. i don’t blame ariana DIRECTLY but it is a socially contagious illness, nuance is key
@hatsune_mitski it’s a delicate situation because i do think the petal MV was genuine bodychecking, and i know firsthand how much of a “showing off” illness it is (NOT saying attention seeking, just that the response from others is something you crave) but i have so much sympathy for her
@hatsune_mitski it’s really sad for her and for everyone, but unfortunately i don’t think she’ll be able to achieve the theatre/film career she wants until she recovers. you need an insane amount of energy to perform 8 shows a week
