Don't let experimentation be the roadblock to your startup's growth.
Rethink your experimentation approach by avoiding these 7 costly mistakes:
- Impatience
- Lack of data fluency
- Expecting a quick ROI
- Starting too big or small
- Lack of customer validation
- No data tracking & repository
- Testing ideas, not assumptions
Ask yourself:
- What problem are we solving?
- Which metrics will we track?
- What's the test time needed?
- How can we validate with early signals?
- How might we best solve that problem?
- What is the right design for this solution?
- What's the effort, impact, and confidence for each solution?
Don't settle for generic personas.
They shouldn't be about demographics.
Customers don't make buying decisions based on their demographics.
They make decisions based on their specific circumstances and needs.
Make sure your marketing and product efforts are based on a deep understanding of your customers' JTBD.
Their context, problems/challenges, and desired outcomes are what matter most.

Marketing tip:
Use your customer's words.
Go to sites like Facebook (groups), G2, App Store, and Amazon
Study and take note of the exact words they use
Now use that to replace your current copy
When you describe the problem in words the customer can relate to
The more trust they'll have that you have the answer to their needs
People buy when they feel heard and understood
No better way to resonate than by mirroring your customer's language
Positioning tip:
Identify the unique features or attributes that set your product apart from competitors.

Your biggest competitor is *not* the product that has a similar feature set as yours.
Your biggest competitor is what your customer is doing right now to do the “job” that they would use your product for.
