We all contribute in different ways to society. Here I make mostly suggestions to policymakers, organisations & the general public regarding global priorities.
I think that AI companies using high amounts of natural resources (land, water, energy), for example, should have to use some of their profits in compensations to nature, such as reforestation and renewable energy projects. We all need to use natural resources responsibly.
And people also matter for their limits. It is important to keep AI (and computers and technology in general) just serving humanity. Digital information society is thin, can only do limited good and can't replace real humanity.
AI surely replaces mediocre advisors, but good philosophers (who are very rare) will always be needed, also to prompt, direct, align, adjust AI. Not only in the ethical sense (for this the best human minds are obviously needed), but also e.g. in the aesthetic sense, which informs
My thoughts here are all written by myself, without using AI unless otherwise stated. My wisdom and capacity for innovation in this and in any area are limited, like all human skills are, as they should be. It's also our human limits that make us all have capacities AI lacks.
(10) compost organic waste; (11) switch to renewable electricity; (12) improve industrial efficiency. There is plenty for everyone to do with just this list.
I've heard that a heatwave is in the USA, not just in Europe, and that a typhoon is expected in the USA as well. How bad does extreme weather need to get before policymakers, relevant organisations and people at large take effective action to reduce CO2 and methane emissions?
(10) All new buildings should be close to zero‑emission and use electric heating. These suggestions might seem strict, but seeing sea level rise very quickly if we are not all careful is worse... Addressing climate change and the environment effectively are global priorities.
Top-10 action-points suggestion list for consideration, to tackle climate change, from AI with a few suggestions from me: (1) All new cars to be electric; (2) Higher tax on petrol and diesel vehicles; (3) Strict methane‑leak detection and repair for all oil & gas infrastructure;
(7) Phase‑out of coal and gas power plants; all new power should be renewable; (8) Mandatory plant‑based menus in public institutions (schools, hospitals, government); (9) Ban landfilling of organic waste; mandatory composting or anaerobic digestion;
I prefer more cultural, i.e. elevated forms of expression, but there is a time for every(good)thing, and these are times for direct advice like this, still needed for many people.
Writing isn't everything, but those with some understanding (which isn't developed overnight...) and with a natural inclination for potentially good ideas for the common good should be encouraged (and perhaps supported) to write.
Yesterday I wrote offline a short (draft) paper *on* democracy and equality, as usual thinking about the common good. If any peers are willing to review it before I publish it, to make it better, or if any publishers could be interested in publishing my work, please say.
I don't use AI much, or use it very (very) selectively. Here is what it said when I asked about global research priorities, after I gave it some from my own thinking. I already work in education and would like to do more sustained work for some of these global priorities.
