I’ve been saying this all along.

If the argument is that Lindsay Clancy should be found not guilty because her mental state made her incapable of being legally responsible for her actions, then we need to have a much bigger conversation about the implications of that argument.

Women cannot demand to be treated as fully capable, independent adults—CEOs, judges, governors, commanders and presidents—while simultaneously embracing the idea that womanhood or postpartum illness automatically removes criminal responsibility when something horrific happens.

You cannot have equality without accountability.

And before anyone twists my words: I’m a woman. I’m not saying women can’t be trusted. I’m saying lowering the standard of accountability for women ultimately undermines the very equality women fought for.

Mental illness deserves compassion and treatment. But the lives of Cora, Dawson and Callan Clancy deserve justice, too.

Equal rights. Equal responsibility. Equal accountability.
