The Times has written a piece today about the referees tax status case. There is a glaring omission, which has resulted in a significant error in their reporting.

The Times reports that individuals pay less tax when they work via limited companies, by comparing income tax rates with dividend tax rates.

The HUGE ERROR is that they have failed to take into account corporation tax.

For high earning high-profile people, working via limited companies, they will be paying 25p out of each pound as corporation tax. The rate for dividends is 39.35%. The effective tax rate is 54.5%. Compared to employees who pay 45%.

It's simply untrue to claim that people working via limited companies (earning more than about £70k) pay less tax than employees.
