@MarkJCarney Look around… notice all the pedophiles, mentally ill, retards, S&M and child groomers? Wake the fuck up.
I bet you can’t define man or woman.
Katie is dead.
She was killed on the streets of Urbana, Illinois, just outside the University of Illinois campus, by a Illegal Immigrant drunk driver traveling nearly 80 mph.
We would never look at someone recklessly handling a firearm while impaired and dismiss it as “just a gun incident.”
So why do we so often reduce an impaired driver controlling thousands of pounds of metal at highway speeds to “just a DUI”?
The problem is bigger than the label.
We have become too comfortable explaining, contextualizing and normalizing dangerous behavior after the fact, rather than building consequences that actually deter it beforehand.
In Katie’s case, the tragedy also exposed the deadly nexus of illegal immigration and drunk driving.
We cannot allow explanations to become excuses or context to become absolution.
We need real deterrence.
We need accountability.
And we need the courage to examine every policy and system that allowed the danger to reach Katie.
Katie cannot be brought back.
But we can decide whether her death, and the deaths of so many others, will change what we are willing to tolerate.
As a country, we have to do better.
I wrote about it here: What We Choose to Call Dangerous
