A long missing Palatine Latin manuscript surfaced through INLIBRIS and was swiftly recognized by the Heidelberg University Library and the Vatican Library.
Identified as Pal. lat. 851, the codex has now been restored to its historical collection and made available to scholars. The rediscovery and collaboration were documented in L’Osservatore Romano (23 January 2026).

Der christlich Glaube Mit Gottseligen christlichen und hoch tröstlichen Gebeten wie ein jeder Christ Täglich vor den Augen des Herrn seines Gottes erscheinen mag.
[Oertl, Hieronymus. Nuremberg, ca. 1600]
Unique prayer book manuscript on vellum, containing sixteen full-page illuminated engravings after Marten de Vos: a highly expressive devotional work of the waning 16th century. One of only eight known manuscripts by Hieronymus Oertl, it provides a “unique example of the art of book arts around 1600” (Baeyer, p. 6), highlighting the transitory period between the Middle Ages and the Baroque, between manuscript and printed book.
The twelve engravings illustrate the individual articles of the Creed from Creation to the Resurrection and eternal life. Both content and iconography stand out from Oertl’s other efforts: only the “frontispiece” was also used in another of his works (albeit with different illumination). The suite is based on a 13-sheet set of engravings after drawings from de Vos’s “Credo”, printed in Amsterdam in 1633 as “XII Fidei Apostolicae Symbola”. The signature “Ioann Collaert sculp.” testifies to the engravers Adrian and Jan Collaert II (while the information “M. de Vos invent.” and “Adrian Collaert sculp.” or “excud.” is trimmed away).
The splendid engravings boast gilt highlights and a richly differentiated colour scheme, “ranging from delicate and sensitive translucent washes to pastose coloring” (Baeyer, p. 64).

Rodericus Zamorensis (Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo).
[Speculum vitae humanae - germanice]. Spiegel des menschlichen Lebens.
Augsburg, Johann Bämler, 23. VII. 1479.
Second German edition of the “Speculum vitae humanae” (Mirror of Human Life), a popular early modern work on the virtuous life. Designed as an aid to good decision-making, the text discusses the advantages and shortcomings of all the secular and ecclesiastical professions and estates of medieval society. For today’s readers, the work provides a wealth of information on the cultural history and everyday life of the Middle Ages.
The first German (and first illustrated) edition emerged from Günter Zainer’s Augsburg press in 1476. The Ulm humanist and town physician Heinrich Steinhöwel (ca. 1411-79) completed his translation by 1474; his original manuscript is preserved in the Bavarian State Library (cgm 1137). He replaced Rodrigo’s dedication by his own, addressed to Duke Sigismund of Tirol, which the printer Johann Bämler omitted in the present second German edition, also tightening the first two books. A third German edition would be printed by Peter Berger in 1488, also in Augsburg.
The present second edition in German is even scarcer than the first: ISTC notes only fifteen copies worldwide, two of which in are the U.S. MRFH lists one more copy and three with unknown locations. The book is extremely rare in the trade: none of all three German editions are listed in ABPC.

Taken from a monumental illustrated #Firdausi#Shahnameh manuscript produced in Kashmir, complete in 4 parts and containing 84 miniatures distributed throughout the text. The manuscript reflects sustained artistic planning and elite patronage within a Persianate cultural environment in which the Shahnameh remained a central text of kingship, history, and literary authority.
It bears a 19th century princely ownership inscription naming Shahzadah Shir Ali Khan and Shir Muhammad Ali, as well as a dated inscription from 1863 CE, underscoring its continued circulation and prestige in the modern period.
