Two flights from Europe to India.
Two completely different routes. Why?

Both of these flights connect Europe and India.
But their routes are completely different.

➡️ One flight crosses Saudi airspace.
➡️ The other makes a long detour via East Africa.

Several factors influence these routing decisions. These include geopolitics, conflict-zone risk assessments and operator policies.

Air operators must continually assess the risks of flying near conflict zones. Authorities may issue NOTAM restrictions or closures, and regulators and safety bodies publish guidance on conflict zones to help operators evaluate potential threats.

At the same time, geopolitics also plays a role. Pakistan does not allow Indian airlines to overfly its airspace, forcing them to fly further south.

The result: Different airlines sometimes take very different routes.

It's important to remember that flight planning is not just about distance or fuel efficiency. Nowadays, it's increasingly about geopolitics and risk management.
