I received a LinkedIn connection request from Prof. Folasade Ogunsola @UnilagVC in March. I accepted and we connected. She then sent me her WhatsApp number for ease of communication and we have been chatting and exchanging pleasantries since then.
Two days ago, the number started to send me what were clearly 419 fraud messages. I have reached out to her on LinkedIn and by text message to ask if her WhatsApp has been hacked but there has been no response. It just struck me that the person with the WhatsApp number may have created the LinkedIn profile for fraud purposes.
Anyone who knows Prof Ogunsola should please alert her to this. I am reluctant to share the WhatsApp number here in case it is her real number and it’s just her WhatsApp that has been hacked. Thank you.
Question: “I want my child to become a successful coder. What should we do now while the child is still in secondary school?”
My Response: First, I should clarify that I am not a career counselor and I hold no professional license in that field. However, drawing from my personal experiences and observations of others, I believe that a child who develops a strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and chemistry during the early stages of education has a much greater chance of thriving in computing and engineering than one who is pushed too early into coding and programming languages without those fundamentals.
The best developers and creators in computer science and engineering are typically excellent students of mathematics and physics. They use computational thinking as a tool to solve complex problems. Before a problem can be translated into code, it must first be understood and resolved at the level of mathematical reasoning and physical principles. In that sense, coding is not the pinnacle of the process; mathematics and physics form the intellectual architecture upon which useful software and systems are built.
I experienced this firsthand during my PhD studies at Johns Hopkins University. In a course titled Computer Integrated Surgery, my major project involved building a machine capable of controlling a needle through an endoscope / laryngoscope so that it could pass through the larynx, enabling a physician to perform minimally invasive throat surgery with the assistance of the da Vinci medical robot. It was an extremely complex engineering challenge.
The real difficulty of the project was not writing code. The challenge lay in solving the mathematical equations required to track the needle, the surgical instruments, and the human tissues involved in the procedure. Using markers and imaging systems, mathematics had to ensure precise positioning and movement within the human body. Without the math, the coding phase would not arrive.
For young people interested in computing, the message is clear. Learn to code, certainly, but build a deep foundation in mathematics, physics, and analytical thinking. Those foundations enable you to operate at the upstream layers of technology, where systems are designed, algorithms are invented, and real breakthroughs occur. Without that depth, coding risks remaining at the downstream layers, where the opportunities for differentiation and long-term impact are far more limited especially now that coding is being commoditized by AI https://t.co/B5Cv7fmiQQ

Multi-factor authentication provides an extra layer of security for identity verification. The advantage is MFA reduces the chances of an attacker to have unauthorised access, even if the bad actor has compromised the first layer password
Day 10/31 Strong authentication prevents weak outcomes (Colonial Pipeline, 2021)
In May 2021, Colonial Pipeline, the company responsible for delivering nearly half of the East Coast’s fuel supply was forced to shut down its entire network after discovering ransomware within its systems.
The attackers, a cybercriminal group known as DarkSide, gained access through a compromised password linked to an inactive virtual private network (VPN) account that lacked multi-factor authentication (MFA).
As the shutdown extended over several days, gas stations across multiple states ran dry, flights were disrupted, and widespread panic buying started.
Colonial Pipeline paid approximately $4.4 million in Bitcoin to regain access and restore operations, although a portion of the ransom was later recovered by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The incident demonstrated how a single weak credential could escalate into a national crisis.

Employee training on Cybersecurity needs to move from traditional awareness approach to cyber readiness trainings built around behavioural analytics. Your actions or in actions triggers a training recommendation that must be completed to regain access to certain resources.
Day 6/31 When trust becomes the weakest link (M&S, 2025)
This spring, Britain’s high street giant, Marks & Spencer, found itself at the center of a cyber storm.
By tricking employees of M&S’s trusted third party, the attackers gained the foothold they needed. They used social engineering to deceive helpdesk staff into handing over access. The attackers posed as internal IT, obtaining credentials, resetting passwords, and then infiltrating M&S network.
Once inside, the attackers deployed ransomware, encrypting data and stealing customer records.
The operational impact on M&S was severe. With core IT systems offline, stores could not scan or automatically track millions of products, forcing staff to rely on manual workarounds.
The stock market reacted badly, at one point, the attack wiped roughly £750 million off M&S’s market value.
Recovery was slow and painful. What stings most? The attackers simply walked in through a side door left open by human trust.

When an employee understands the level of trust bestowed on him/her, the tendency to become a threat reduces.
Day 5/31 When Access becomes a Weapon (Tesla, 2018)
In mid-2018, Tesla uncovered an alarming internal breach. Sensitive manufacturing data had been leaked, and unauthorized changes were found in the company’s Manufacturing Operating System.
At first, investigators suspected an external attack. But the culprit turned out to be one of their own, a production technician.
Using legitimate access, he allegedly exported gigabytes of confidential data to unknown third parties and made code changes that could have disrupted operations.
Tesla claimed he acted out of frustration over workplace issues, while he insisted he was a whistleblower exposing safety and quality problems.
This was not a phishing or malware attack. It is an example of how a trusted insider, with the right credentials and motivation, can become a company’s most dangerous vulnerability.

Day 4/31 Every Breach is a Lesson (Co-op, 2025)
In April 2025, one of Britain’s oldest and most trusted retail cooperatives, the Co-op, found itself in the crosshairs of a cyberattack that shook its foundations.
Investigations suggest the attackers may have used social engineering to trick Co-op IT/helpdesk staff into resetting passwords or granting access.
Store shelves were unstocked, deliveries were delayed/ cancelled, and staff were left unable to perform basic operational tasks.
To contain the threat, Co-op deliberately powered down parts of its IT systems, effectively choosing disruption over deeper compromise.
Then came the news no member wanted to hear: the personal details of 6.5 million Co-op members, including names and contact information, had been stolen.
