Knowing her eggs will need food as soon as they hatch, the female Black Soldier Fly (#BSF) sniffs out rotting food matter and lays her eggs safely in a crevice near it.
@insectifii , we harness this instinct of the female BSF to collect their eggs by placing wooden crevices.

Black Soldier Flies are highly sensitive to the blue, green and UV components in sunlight. When the sun appears from behind a cloud, you can see the entire cage burst into activity instantly!
This is crucial for successful mating, which gives us lots and lots of fertile eggs.

@BiotechRonin @foodcycleny Thanks for this discussion! We agree that the numbers seem impossible, and the article may have reported the wrong numbers. It could also be a translation issue. We do not recommend the article’s numbers to be used a gauge for any BSFL enthusiast who wants to treat waste!
