Worryingly, the latest NHS England data shows that the number of new patients making it onto the waiting list remains significantly below pre-pandemic levels, as fewer people attend A&E and primary care settings. The missing referrals indicate a sizeable 'hidden' backlog.
The latest NHS England figures show that the total elective surgery waiting list stood at 4.34 million in September. Just under 140,000 patients had waited more than a year.
