I pulled the current pricing for 10 popular SaaS tools off their own pricing pages and put each next to the open-source version self-hosted.
Median commercial tool: ~$138/yr.
Median to self-host: ~$36/yr.
But the median hides the real lesson. Here's the honest per-tool math
The pattern: flat self-hosting wins whenever SaaS meters by host, seat, or task. For cheap single-user tools it's break-even, and you do it for ownership.
A $3/mo pod includes SSL, a subdomain, SSH, and a web terminal. The software is free.
Heroku eco dyno: $5/mo, sleeps.
Vercel free: works until you need a database.
A raw VPS: 2 hours of nginx and systemd.
I built InstaPods because none of those should be the answer for a $3 side project.
