But even one baby dying from an unnecessary genital surgery is too many. And of course the medical industry doesn't keep data on this because of how bad it would make them look, so we really have no idea.

Most FGM performed worldwide is of the type IV in the image you linked. This means that it's most often less severe than circumcision. The other types are extremely rare.

Considering most circumcisions in the US are done without any anesthesia whatsoever, if all you're considering is the pain aspect, then it is just as bad. Many babies go into shock from the pain of circ.

@relaxedhuman Yeah, they literally said that the benefits aren't great enough to warrant routine infant circumcision, but are enough to warrant insurance covering it. If that statement doesn't make it obvious they just want to make money off it, then I don't know what does.

FGM performed in the US is done exclusively for religious reasons, and is pretty much exclusively ritual nicking, which is less severe, such as by the dawoodi bohra, a sect of Islam.

It is most likely type IV FGM, which includes ritual nicking and pricking, mainly done for religious reasons. Meanwhile, thousands of boys every day go through something more severe than that.
