German soldiers frequently waved white flags in interactions with British forces during the last phase of the WWII, most commonly to signal a truce, request a parley, or officially surrender.
In April 1945, the Third Reich was collapsing under the weight of its own chaos.
As British troops advanced through northern Germany, an unexpected event took place near the village of Belsen.
A German officer approached the British lines carrying a white flag. He did not come to negotiate a standard surrender or challenge the troops to a final battle. Instead, he made a strange request for a localized truce.
The officer explained that a nearby concentration camp, Bergen-Belsen, was suffering from an uncontrollable outbreak of typhus and other deadly infectious diseases. He warned that if the disease spread beyond the compound, it would endanger advancing Allied troops and local civilian populations alike.
British commanders were skeptical about the enemy's motives, but they dispatched reconnaissance patrols to investigate the claim. The report from the patrols confirmed that the situation was real.
On April 12, both sides agreed to establish a neutral zone covering forty-eight square kilometers around the camp.
Under the terms of the agreement, combat was suspended in that area, and Hungarian and German guards remained at their posts to maintain order until Allied forces arrived, after which they were to be allowed to withdraw to their own lines.
Three days later, on April 15, British forces entered Bergen-Belsen.
Although these men were combat veterans who had witnessed years of destruction across Europe, nothing prepared them for what they encountered behind the wire.
Inside the camp were sixty thousand surviving prisoners suffering from severe starvation, dysentery, and typhus.
Alongside the living lay approximately thirteen thousand unburied corpses scattered across the grounds.
A British officer who arrived during those initial hours described the scene to his fellow soldiers.
"I have never seen human beings reduced to such a state. There are thousands of bodies lying everywhere, and the living are too weak to move them away," he said.
Among the early visitors was BBC war correspondent Richard Dimbleby.
When he sent his dispatch back to London, the news executives initially hesitated to broadcast it because the details sounded too horrific to be authentic.
Dimbleby insisted on the truth of his report, telling his editors, "I passed through the barrier of the camp and found myself in a world of absolute nightmare. If you do not play my recording, I will never work for the BBC again."
The network broadcast his report shortly after, bringing the reality of the camps to the global public.
Medical personnel and relief workers moved in quickly to stabilize the survivors, establish field hospitals, and bury the dead to prevent further contamination.
Despite their efforts, thousands more prisoners died in the weeks following the liberation due to the advanced state of illness and starvation.
The story of Bergen-Belsen serves as a historical record of what happens when state authority operates without moral boundaries.
Remembering these events ensures that the documented facts of history remain clear for future generations.
The quiet dignity of those who suffered continues to linger in the human memory, offering a silent hope that light will always find a way to endure beyond the darkest nights.

1/ The arrest in Montenegro of Russia's leading warblogger, Mikhail Zvinchuk, is causing shock in Russia. He and his wife potentially face 15 years' imprisonment if they are extradited to the US after an operation said to have involved the US National Security Agency. ⬇️
Kasparov: Ukraine is under the heaviest bombardment one can imagine. On CNN you see Gaza, Gaza, Gaza.
If Israel did to Gaza for 24 hours what Putin does to Ukraine, there would be no Gaza. Russia's bombing of Ukraine is much worse than carpet bombing. 1/
I’m begging you. Stop and watch this one minute.
This is not a movie.
This is Ukraine today.

❗️German Quantum Systems plans to supply Ukraine with tens of thousands of high-speed SPYS interceptor drones, designed in particular to counter the Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles. SPYS is a joint development by Quantum Systems and Ukrainian WIY Drones under the joint venture Quantum WIY Industries; the system was adapted from the outset to the real conditions of Ukrainian air defense, drawing on experience with earlier interceptors, including STRILA. The company says it can use existing STRILA production lines to manufacture several thousand SPYS units per month, with the first thousands ready for delivery this year.

HOW TO SPOT RUSSIAN DISINFORMATION - 12 NETWORKS & METHODS
Russian information operations don’t all work the same way.
Some clone news websites.
Some manufacture scandals.
Some flood search engines.
Some use fake local identities.
Some manufacture the appearance of public consensus.
I’ve produced a visual identification guide to 12 of the main networks, operations and techniques we repeatedly encounter.
Each post explains the signature, how to recognise it, real examples and sources.

Literally nobody in Germany even thinks about Alsace-Lorraine. 🇫🇷🇩🇪
Not the government, not the public, not anyone in the street. Ask a German about annexing Alsace and you'll get a confused stare.
So why is your feed full of it?
Because a handful of pro-AfD influencer accounts post old maps for attention. And because RN (Le Pen) and LFI (Mélenchon) accounts in France happily pass them around as proof that Germany is coming for French land.
It's ragebait, built to demolish Franco-German reconciliation. Every share plants the same idea: the neighbour is a threat again.
Look at who is doing it. It's always the same people: the ones who want an end to Europe, to cooperation, to peace on our continent.
The ones whose politics serve their masters abroad, whether in Moscow or in Washington.
They will try anything to divide the public and sow mistrust before Spain votes in November and France, Poland and Italy vote in 2027.
This is their latest move: turn France and Germany against each other. Because they know that if this friendship falls, everything falls.
Don't give them the click.
The russian plan to encircle Donbas is completely fucked. Ukrainians sent waves of ground drones into their positions and blew them all up. Totally ingenious
Even the UN’s confirmed figures are shocking.
This is not some “abstract front line.”
These are people out buying bread. Night-shift workers. Teenagers on the stairs. Children in their beds.
Will the world ever show genuine outrage over these killings?
"Kremlin uses these so-called “Russian Houses” not only to promote Russian culture but also as tools of political influence and information operations."
🇪🇺 EU lawmakers are calling for the closure of all “Russian Houses” across the European Union
A group of 71 Members of the European Parliament has urged EU leaders to shut down Russian cultural centers that are still operating in 15 member states.
The initiative's author, Lithuanian MEP Rasa Juknevičienė, argues that the Kremlin uses these so-called “Russian Houses” not only to promote Russian culture but also as tools of political influence and information operations.
Meanwhile, Rossotrudnichestvo, the Russian government agency running the network, is already under EU sanctions.
Although the decision to close such centers formally rests with national governments, the lawmakers are calling for a unified EU-wide mechanism.
The move comes after reports that the “Russian House” in Berlin was recently shut down.
