He arrived on a tourist visa, but after his visa expired, he decided to settle in India illegally. Police reportedly recovered a Voter ID card and other Indian identity documents from him.

Police allege that he obtained forged Indian documents with the assistance of Mohammed Talha, who operated a local Jan Seva Kendra (CSC).
