Archaeologists in Shaanxi Province, China have unearthed Han dynasty tomb boards for Liubo — an ancient board game that predates chess by around 500 years and was once played by everyone from emperors to commoners. At its peak during the Western Han period (206 BC–9 AD), Liubo was one of the most popular games in China. It was played by two players using 12 pieces — six black and six white — and six throwing sticks thought to function as dice. The board features 12 paths leading to a central "water" area. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University believe each player controlled birds that could evolve into owls and catch fish in the central pond for points, with the first to reach six points winning. Each game is estimated to have lasted between 10 and 45 minutes. Despite the game's former ubiquity — evidenced by artifacts, ancient texts, and tomb paintings — its precise rules have been completely lost, believed to have disappeared during the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD). In 2019, over 1,000 bamboo slips found in a Jiangxi tomb were found to contain Liubo gameplay rules, and Peking University researchers are still working to decipher them. The new Shaanxi findings offer fresh clues about the game's widespread reach — but its full ruleset remains one of history's unsolved puzzles.

Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, is approaching its lowest water level since it was filled in the 1930s. The reservoir’s famous “bathtub ring” marks where water once covered the surrounding rocks.
To help stabilize the shrinking Colorado River system, California’s Metropolitan Water District will leave billions of gallons of water in Lake Mead, receiving up to $65 million from the US Bureau of Reclamation for the conservation effort.
The reservoir supplies water to around 25 million people across the US Southwest and Mexico, supporting drinking water, agriculture, and hydropower.

A coral reef off the coast of Benin that was believed to have disappeared in the 1960s has been rediscovered alive and thriving more than 60 years later.
Using sonar mapping and underwater drones, researchers surveyed 11.5 kilometers of seabed and found a healthy mesophotic coral ecosystem at depths of 52–56 meters. The reef contained eight coral types and eight fish species, including the Guinean angelfish and golden African snapper.
Scientists believe this discovery could be the first sign of a larger network of overlooked deep-water reefs across the Gulf of Guinea, one of the least studied coastal regions in the world.
