Self-exploration can be profoundly reparative but only when it unfolds within an accurate anthropology of the person.
Engaging in analytic work with a clinician who holds a reductive or fragmented view of human nature risks subtle psychic distortion, as the therapeutic frame itself participates in shaping the client’s self-representation and moral imagination.

I don’t know precisely why (when there is so much other genuine cruelty in the world) but something in me really winces every time I see someone reply, “Is it in the room with us right now?”

Before I can become who God created me to be, I often have to meet the parts of myself I would rather avoid.
The shadow reveals wounds that need healing and places that need grace.
It does not reveal my deepest identity.
My deepest identity is received from God.

People move toward what they perceive as good.
When someone’s vision narrows around a particular issue, I wonder what beloved thing they are trying to protect and what suffering has convinced them that such protection is necessary.
Can I approach that suffering with greater curiosity than I bring to the behavior it produces?

The self cannot bear the weight of being its own god.
The problem is not that the self is unimportant.
The problem is that the self is too important to be its own highest end.

SEL often invites a child to name what is interior and mysterious on a worksheet between math and spelling. Yet the soul is not a prompt! It reveals itself through mutual self giving, where unconditional love and attuned presence have made it safe. Interior revelation belongs to relationship. The family is the school. Without attunement, what is called reflection can quickly become hyperreflection, identity confusion, and…chaos.

@karenmitchell__ Sometimes the thought crosses my mind wondering how many of us therapists have entire caseloads of people who are in therapy because they had the misfortune of marrying a narcissist/psychopath or was raised by one.
Sitting asking questions with your interlocutor present, already shows your right to inquire.
That right does not confer correctness, and invoking the Constitution to bridge that gap clouds reasoning. Freedom of thought is not proof of truth…

@newstart_2024 Yeah it all seems simple but had she spent real hours sitting with people in the thick of trauma, and allowed even a small measure of Christian mercy to shape her view, she might recognize that healing is wider and deeper than CBT/DBT + behavioral activation alone…
