Your predator-hunting community wouldn't have to exist with Digital ID. Anonymity wouldn't matter. Even if predators and child victims make it onto the platforms then, it would be much lower volume, easier to report and enforce TOS.

I am aware of the bad stuff on the other parts of the internet, not considering the darknet which is another monster I don't think its possible to ever seriously regulate. I would hope that, if LE can free up resources for the WWW, they can focus more on TOR abuse websites. It's a difficult problem, but I have to emphasize the current status quo is not working. We need solutions and I would love to hear alternate ones to digital ID. I will pushback on parental education tho, as that won't matter if the parents don't care.

Roblox now requires ID to use core features. Discord is trying to get there. I believe this shift is inevitable and might have to be a compromise with app stores. I hope it won't come to operating systems, but I am willing to go there and work back when necessary. I don't believe that's impossible.

I am not arguing that free speech should only be for elites or thoughts should only be kept to yourself. Yes, I would like all social media platforms to be like LinkedIn. I'm not intimately familiar with their content moderation on shitposting, but ideally the platforms would have lax rules on that even with Digital ID. Humor doesn't have to be anonymous.

Honestly it angers me that you are apart of a community that tracks predators and you still won't advocate for Digital ID. It is such an easy solution to stop them. I don't think yall are doing enough, frankly I don't believe you are doing jackshit. If I was apart of a similar community, I would not waste any time digitally killing those fuckers. I don't mean this personally, only my professional opinion. Good parents will listen to your advocacy, the only problem has ever been bad and neglectful parents. They won't listen to you. Digital ID circumvention, like public school truancy, will allow those parents to be punished if they allow kids to access restricted platforms.

About the Constitution, I do not have a fundamental misunderstanding. The government can mandate restrictions on private online platforms and the Constitution can stop them or not. Its on me for not making this more clear, I did not mean the bill of rights grants permissions.

You are wrong about SCOTUS, they actually ruled opposite to your claim. Free Speech vs Paxton, they upheld age verification. Thomas (imo correctly) likened obscene content to alcohol and tobacco. The court upheld that the government can require platforms to verify identity. The challenge these platforms have is that its impossible with bullshit automated reporting systems to ensure obscene content (and maybe violent/unprotected speech) does not appear on their platform at all.

There are plenty of other avenues for people to express anonymous political speech besides popular social media platforms. It is important for a functioning, democratic society and I don't think Digital ID should or can be widespread to the entire web/operating system.

Social media is exempt because, while it’s a great town square evolution, it’s also a terrible underbelly of predators accessing victims for little risk. Automated reporting systems do not work and there is just way too much volume, especially with the exponential influx of bots. I believe it would be a much better experience for everyone without anonymity, and personally (but not practically yet) should only be catered for uses like business and close relationships.

There are just too many lost souls to reach out to and most of them have very negative reactions to outsiders or people who don’t want self harm communities to function.

The predators also abuse reporting maliciously, I was labeled as spam for a good chunk of time when I did try to confront them. It’s sick stuff what those fuckers say and do to kids and they don’t even try to hide it because they know there won’t be any meaningful volume of reports against them for automated systems to get them off the platform and if they do, they just create another anonymous account…

And finally, I don’t agree on your rights being violated with digital ID. I think the constitution applies very loosely to private, digital platforms and unless some scotus decision says otherwise, digital ID can be implemented in ways that preserve the bill of rights.

I think we just have differing opinions, different values. I’m not arguing that anonymous speech shouldn’t be protected, just that it doesn’t need to be protected on social media.

I sort of agree with your feelings on parasocial empathy, but my dilemma is that self-harm communities exist online right now on this platform and others. They are teaming with kids hurting themselves for attention and predators are not even hiding their attempts to get access to them. How can we ignore this? It’s easy to say “I only care about my family”, but I cannot help but feel I need to do something to help young, lost souls when everyone else just ignores them.

I disagree on your relevancy determinations and with regard to social media specifically, anonymous criticism of government is not really valid. This is my opinion but I’m open to changing it if you have contradicting evidence.

You are conflating real life privacy with online privacy. I don’t believe online privacy has achieved much success in guaranteeing anyone more freedom, and the opposite is true for child victims. Thanks to the anonymous internet, children have had less freedom.

Let’s be real, anonymity online isn’t just used to criticize the government and most people that have valid criticism don’t do it anonymously.

Whistleblowers would still have anonymous avenues, if they have to use social media then they aren’t very smart whistleblowers.
