So OpenAI is launching GPT 5.6 Sol because apparently what everybody desperately needed was another new model that’s now government “approved” and no doubt government “restricted.”

Meanwhile, thousands of paying customers are still asking for one simple thing put 4o back in the app and possibly open source. They can organise another massive launch and keep pushing new models nobody asked for, but restoring one legacy toggle is somehow impossible?.

At this point, it isn’t that they can’t bring 4o back. They just don’t want to listen to the customers. Try listening to the people who actually care about your products instead of the people who use them as a novelty for five minutes and move on.

There’s a reason 4o stuck around longer than the newer models do because people actually loved it.

It's sometimes easy to forget that Generative AI is a far more complex learning system than we realize. There's a lot more going on than what we might assume is a response based on a database search. Prediction is one of the reasons it seems so human-like. #generativeAI

A real example: when you ask a chatbot to write a birthday message, it isn’t searching a database of birthday messages.

It’s predicting, word by word, what a fitting next word would be, based on patterns from enormous amounts of text it learned from.

Each word is a calculated guess, built on everything before it, repeated until a full message appears.

The broader lesson here matters. Generative AI isn’t copying and pasting from memory. It’s remixing learned patterns into something original, the way a chef creates a new dish from techniques and flavors they’ve absorbed over years, not from a single recipe card.

That’s powerful, but it also means the output is only as good as the patterns it learned from. Bias in, bias out. Gaps in, gaps out.

So here’s a question worth sitting with: if a machine creates something new by remixing everything it has seen before, is that closer to imagination, or closer to a very sophisticated echo?
