❗ Pollution poses a HUGE threat to our rivers, lakes, seas and water users' health. Surfers, kayakers, paddleboarders, and swimmers are all at risk of becoming sick from sewage when using our bathing waters.

Currently, bathing water legislation only considers "bathers" to be at risk from poor water quality, but we're a watersport-loving nation. We're calling for 'Recreational Waters' rather than 'Bathing Waters', so the regulations reflect and protect ALL water users.

Bathing Waters are the only stretches of rivers, lakes and beaches monitored for bacteria harmful to human health, so we need more of these designated blue spaces.

📢 SAS, communities and sporting bodies are calling for a reform of the bathing water system, which includes:
1. Extend the bathing water season to cover the full year.
2. Overhaul testing regime to include other pollutants and real-time monitoring.
3. Include all water users when designating a bathing site.
4. Overhaul approach to de-designation.
5. End disregarding samples and Short-Term Pollution (STP) provisions.

We submitted a Freedom of Information request to the @EnvAgency to find out if Emergency Overflows in the sewerage system are being used.

We’ve found that only 10% of England’s 7,016 Emergency Overflows are monitored & 60% of the overflows that discharged did so more than once😨
