🚨According to former chief of PGMOL, Keith Hackett, he would not have allowed Michael Oliver or today’s VAR, Darren England, to accept very lucrative offers from a league controlled by City’s or Newcastle’s owner to referee there.
From my point of view — that should be a given. Not only is it in it itself very questionable for a PL ref to do business directly or indirectly with owners of PL teams, it takes place in a very high risk environment in dictatorships in an area with very high corruption (look at the Qatar World Cup).
I don’t believe that Oliver on purpose is impartial — but if we look at his body of work this season — it’s one scandalous call after another benefitting City/Newcastle to the detriment of their rivals. And there are some very very odd statistics, 75% of his yellows for complaints have been given to Man Utd players. He gives Manchester United’s captain a yellow for approaching him alone saying ‘it was on the ball, it was on the ball’, but let City player circle him and complain without limits. The Ake goal. The soft City penalty in the derby (as VAR! Clear and obvious?). A penalty for McTs handball, none for Romero’s handball. Red card bonanza against Tottenham when they were at the top of the table. The incidents with Arsenal and Liverpool.
Why on earth is he and Engeland always appointed to call these games? It’s not a conspiracy theory to question if he shouldn’t be deemed to have a conflict of interest due to his dealings with City’s owner — I would say that it’s remarkable that he is allowed to ref these games.
Football fans deserve better than to have their games called by referees who in the eyes of most have clear conflict of interest. It’s as simple as that.
