Unlike the upside surprise in August, where you could identify larger idiosyncratic increases, the miss on core CPI in September was more broadly based.
Core goods printed at +0.25%, the largest monthly gain in a year, and shelter was +0.39%.
Core services excluding housing was +0.42%. After falling to 1% on a three-month annualized basis in July, it jumped to 4.6% in Sept.
In case you are curious .. After Turnaround Tuesday .. Wednesday is mildly bullish and Thursday is uber bearish for stocks.
Given the rabid 45-degree upward trend in the NASDAQ data 1999 to now... It's very rare to do a study of equity performance with a sample size of 30 and get a negative average return.
Thursdays after Turnaround Tuesday average -0.8%. It's probably mean reversion as the weekend approaches and scary things are still scaring poeple.
See table.
