Wiktoria Wojtaczka

physics PhD student at @KU_Leuven working on production of radioactive ion beams, part of Tb-IRMA-V & PRISMAP | #scicomm | she/her | 📸🖍️☢️📏

my research pitch is out! my project is a part of the Tb-IRMA-V consortium where we are trying to bring terbium to hospitals for theranostics and targeted therapy @FWOVlaanderen #fwo #TbIRMAV #theranostics

[SciMingo @SciMingo]

"Is a cure for #cancer stuck in a jar?" @ionwik @KU_Leuven investigates terbium, a chemical element that can be turned into a cancer #drug. However, the problem she wants to solve is pretty similar to that of a cookie stuck in a jar... 🍪

cooled my ion source to be conservative and my beam of interest doubled!!!!!! excellent end to a not excellent day

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

the beam was found

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

us: wow we are so well focused on the implantation foil
the copper rod connected to the foil: you fools

(I knew it was strange that the copper was getting so discoloured)

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

we have a new mass scan software and apparently it cycles the magnet to INFINITY, thank god for interlocks

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

maybe two 24hour days in the lab in one week is a bit of a push

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

I did double shifts (including nights) this week and I can physically feel it - I did manage to cram 2 weeks of work into one week though #phdlife

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

the man, the myth, the legend: Ulli Köster measuring Tb-149 test collection sample

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

did my ions source just go into current limit even though it was stable for over an hour? and I was just running noble gases to establish ion source performance before loading in my sample - terbium fluoride just doesn’t want me to know its ionisation efficiency

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

@Paddy_Regan @SurreyMathsPhys @NPL @STFC_Matters @oneinbillion @UniOfSurrey I didn’t realise the sample was for you!

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

it was a success! many questions from the students, hopefully we will see some of them again in a few years 🥼🪛

tune in to this lecture I organised together with my colleague! Maarten is an amazing speaker so hope to see you there tomorrow 💻

starting tomorrow me and my friend are holding a 3-day summer school on nuclear physics for high school students - I feel both prepared and unprepared but I hope they will have fun

taking apart a broken target to recycle some parts and build a new one

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

I keep forgetting that trying to achieve something on Friday after 5pm or on the weekend never ends well

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

me: let’s run the Noble gas efficiency measurements on the new ion source so I can do terbium fluoride tests on Monday
my ion source: I think not *massive amount of outgassing, so much CO that Noble gases cannot be efficiently ionised*

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

My Frankenstein of an implantation/diffusion study chamber is getting more sophisticated with each day (not the cables though, crocodile clips will have to do for now)

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

the ion source that gave me the first terbium fluorides beams just died, I will be holding a funeral after a post mortem examination 🪦

to be fair we already revived it once so it did well

(whenever I try to apply voltage to the anode it goes straight into current limit 🥲)

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

when your boyfriend is a sound engineer and you show him a cable you Frankenstein’ed yourself (that has stopped working RIP you were good to me) #phdlife

[Wiktoria Wojtaczka @ionwik]

mentally I’m here (physically I’m in my office looking at some data) #phdlife
