The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest large galaxy to the Milky Way, and the two are slowly moving toward each other at a speed of about 110 kilometers per second. Although that sounds incredibly fast, the enormous distance between them means the collision will not happen for around 4 billion years.

When the galaxies finally meet, it will not be like a crash between solid objects. Galaxies are mostly empty space, so the stars inside them are so far apart that direct star-to-star collisions are extremely unlikely. Instead, their powerful gravity will gradually pull them together, stretching their spiral arms, mixing vast clouds of gas and dust, and triggering the birth of many new stars.

Over millions of years, the Milky Way and Andromeda will combine into one much larger galaxy. Astronomers have nicknamed this future galaxy Milkomeda, though its final shape may be more like a giant elliptical galaxy than a spiral one. By studying this future merger, scientists gain valuable insights into how galaxies grow and evolve across the universe.
