🏦 It’s official: The Usual Stability Loan (USL) is live.
With a 98% governance approval, USL is now deployed: enhancing USD0++’s liquidity and stability while boosting DAO revenue for stakers.
Here’s what you need to know 🧵👇
$0 to $1.8B TVL in under 6 months 💊
That’s what @usualmoney pulled off between July and December.
How? A BD masterclass. Partnerships and integrations were KEY.
If you're building in crypto, you need to study how $USUAL did it. I tell my clients at @moic_digital this all the time.
Let me break it down 🧵👇
✦ First of all, what is USUAL?
Here I will explain it in very simple terms, if you want a deeper dive, you can read this tweet I posted at @moic_digital back in August: https://t.co/HECzGJ79bS
→ @tether is one of the most profitable companies in the world.
In 2024, they reported $13 BILLION in profit.
How?
They get USD in the real-world, issue $USDT on-chain, and invest those "real dollars" in U.S. Treasury Bills.
A portion of their profits also goes into $BTC and Gold.
The result is A MONEY-PRINTING MACHINE.
$USDT has a $141B market cap, but none of that yield is shared with USDT holders. It all stays with Tether, a private company.
→ Now, here comes USUAL.
@usualmoney is a DeFi project rethinking stablecoins by sharing the revenue with the community.
To understand USUAL, you need to know 4 tokens:
• $USD0 → Usual's USD stablecoin, backed 1:1 by RWA with ultra-short maturity.
• $USD0++ → A liquid staked version of $USD0 (locked for 4 years), distributing yield in $USUAL tokens.
⚠️ This is essentially a bond, NOT a stablecoin. There’s been some confusion on this.
• $USUAL → Governance token of the protocol.
• $USUALx → Staked $USUAL that earns 10% of daily $USUAL emissions and shares protocol revenue weekly in $USD0.
The protocol has plans to launch other products in the future.
For now, think of it as a Decentralized Tether or Circle :)
✦ How It All Started: The Pills Campaign
How did Usual go from $0 to $1.8B TVL in under 6 months?
It all began in mid-2024, when airdrop hype was still strong.
The protocol had a very good narrative, but the stablecoin business DEMANDS LIQUIDITY.
So they launched a Points Campaign → The Pills Campaign!
💊 Pills = Usual’s Points System
From the start, Usual did a few things right:
• Predictable Duration → A 4-month campaign (Users hate farming without knowing the timeline).
• Early Adopter Bonus → The earliest participants got a huge multiplier boost.
To earn Pills, users had to either mint & hold $USD0++ or provide liquidity to $USD0 / $USD0++ pools on Curve. (in the very beginning)
This is how TVL began to grow. The success of USUAL = TVL growth.
In just 2 weeks, TVL surged to $125M.
Users could track their ranking, multiplier, and even estimate rewards using a calculator in the "Drugstore" dashboard.
This level of transparency was a huge advantage, making the airdrop campaign more effective and keeping users engaged.
✦ Partnerships → The REAL LEVERAGE!
The Pills Campaign gave Usual the initial push from 0 to 1, but the real catalyst that took TVL to $1.8B? Partnerships.
Several major projects integrated Usual’s products (mainly $USD0++), including:
• @MorphoLabs
• @pendle_fi
• @ether_fi
• @CurveFinance
• @Karak_Network
• @spectra_finance
and more...
The most important integrations were Morpho and Pendle, let me explain why.
Morpho is a permissionless lending protocol.
I recently wrote a deep post about it, you can check it here: https://t.co/wsqsguIsD4
$USUAL farmers could mint USD0++ on Usual, deposit it on Morpho and borrow USDC.
Then, they would mint more USD0++ and keep repeating this process (which is called looping)
This meant everyone was leverage farming $USUAL, pushing TVL through the roof.
Then, the Pendle integration was also important.
In October, Usual announced a new $USD0++ Pendle pool, with even bigger rewards.
At this point, users were leveraged to the tits on Morpho and using that leverage to ape into Pendle’s $USD0++ YT tokens, stacking a ton of Pills in the process.
This created a flywheel effect:
🔄 If everyone is leveraged, you can’t farm efficiently without leverage.
🔄 This forced users to keep boosting their positions.
🔄 As a result, TVL kept climbing.
This is how Usual exploded from $150M to $1.8B TVL in just a few months.
If you're building a project, study exactly how they structured their points campaign and partnerships, it’s a masterclass in DeFi growth.
✦ Not your usual Tokenomics: $USUAL
One of the biggest drivers of interest in @usualmoney was its tokenomics model.
People were tired of the usual VC-grab tokenomics. They wanted something new.
And Usual delivered.
Token Distribution:
• 90% → Community
• 10% → Investors
On top of that, the yields were (and still are!) extremely attractive.
Yields go up to incentivize more TVL.
The more TVL the protocol accumulates, the less inflation the token has (please notice that I'm saying less inflation and NOT deflation)
See the image below to understand the whole flywheel:
Usual integrated with all major DeFi protocols on Ethereum, introduced a fresh tokenomics model, and delivered a great UX, where users could track their rankings and estimate their airdrop rewards.
This is how you run a points campaign.
✦ What's happening right now?
The team executed a great airdrop campaign.
$USUAL was listed on Binance pre-market at $0.30, ran up to $1.20 pre-launch, and hit an ATH of $1.60 post-launch.
However, you’ve probably noticed that TVL dropped from $1.8B to $1.17B, and the price fell to $0.25.
This wasn’t just market conditions, it was largely due to a shift in $USD0++ mechanics.
During the airdrop campaign (and shortly after), $USD0++ was pegged at $1.
The whitepaper made it clear that eventually $USD0++ would not stay pegged, since it’s not a stablecoin—it’s a 4-year bond.
But there was no specified date for the change.
On January 9th, the team set a new floor price at $0.87, aligning it with interest rates on zero-coupon bonds.
The community didn't like it because this meant a 13% loss, and while it was mentioned in the whitepaper, the Gitbook docs made no reference to it, catching everyone off guard.
Some even claimed that VCs were blindsided too.
This lack of transparency damaged trust, prompting many to exit the project, which dragged both TVL and price down.
I’ll soon explain why I'm still bullish and am accumulating a LOT of $USUALx, but for now, here’s what you should keep in mind:
• Usual nailed its airdrop strategy. Transparency and integrations were key to that success.
• The team dropped the ball on USD0++ transparency afterwards, which hurt their credibility.
But it's not the end of the world...
USD0++ is currently at $0.94, and the team will soon announce a plan to repeg it to $1 via USD0 fixed-rate borrowing (5%), using USD0++ as collateral.
I will talk more about this mechanism, called USUAL Stability Loan (USL), once it's live.
✦ Why am I still bullish?
Ok, now this is MY OPINION and it is not financial advice.
I am buying a lot of USUAL and staking into USUALx as part of my DCA strategy.
Despite the lack of transparency with the USD0++ drop, I remain very bullish on Usual’s vision of "de-tethering" the market.
Also, the protocol shares revenue with USUALx stakers.
• $1.17 BILLION in TVL, generating revenue via RWA
• Currently distributing $800K per week
• DAO revenue: $47M per year—and the protocol is still NEW!
Right now, I’m earning 216% APY on my $USUALx:
• 121% in $USUAL
• 95% in USD0
I love this model, which is why I’m continuously DCAing and accumulating more USUALx over time.
This lets me grow my position while earning more passive income.
The market hasn’t realized this yet.
When they do, and when the RWA narrative heat up again, I believe $USUAL will take off.
That’s my take. Not financial advice, but I play with conviction and go hard when I see an opportunity.
I always share my honest, unbiased views here.
Hope you enjoyed reading this.
