Q: Among all of your songs that you wrote, what's your favorite song?
🐱: Tomorrow, I really like that song because I wrote it in high school. I wrote the beat and stuff when I was a trainee and wrote the melody and lyrics when I was in hospital after my appendix burst. The song itself has a hopeful tone.
As soon as school let out early last Friday afternoon, I met two of my Southeast Asian ARMY friends for a quick coffee before setting off on a drive along Korea's East Sea coast.
I started the old car under a ceiling of gray clouds hanging low over Seoul. The sky looked as though it had made up its mind to rain. My car lumbered down the highway, leaving the threatening clouds in the rearview mirror. Mile by mile, the clouds thinned. The bright light returned. By the time I reached the sea, the water lay calm beneath a clear blue sky.
I picked a spot on a nearly deserted beach. Intentionally, I had driven far north, away from the larger coastal cities and the crowds. From my backpack, I pulled out a novel by Chung Bora called 아이들의 집 (The House of Children).
For those unfamiliar with her work, Chung Bora is the author of Cursed Bunny, one of the most unsettling and memorable Korean books I have ever read. The English translation was done by Anton Hur, who many ARMYs may recognize as one of the translators of Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS. Cursed Bunny went on to earn international acclaim and was shortlisted for some of the world's most prestigious literary awards, including the U.S. National Book Award and the International Booker.
I spent the afternoon reading with the sound of waves in the background. As the sun began its slow descent on the other side of the sea, I noticed something familiar on the horizon. The dark clouds I had left behind in Seoul had finally caught up with me. That was my cue to leave.
I found the nearest restaurant, satisfied a growing hunger, and then began searching for a place to spend the night.
Three days and wet coastal roads later, I am now safely settled at a relative's home in Busan, where I'll be staying for the rest of the week.
The school year, like every storm cloud, eventually passes. I plan to enjoy the season that follows to the fullest.
To all the teacher and student ARMYs beginning their summer break (and the Southern Hemisphere ARMYs beginning winter break), be safe, rest well, and make great memories!
