A small tsunami at one point on the shore can be extremely large a few kilometers away. Don't let the modest size of one make you lose respect and ignorance to the possible bigger threat.
A tsunami is not a single wave, but a series of waves carrying a massive volume of water that can flood and inundate land for hours. The first wave may not be the largest. Stay out of danger areas until an "all-clear" is issued by a recognized authority.
Offshore reefs and shallow areas may help break the force of tsunami waves, but large and dangerous waves can still be a threat to coastal residents in these areas. Staying away from all low-lying coastal areas is the safest advice when there is a tsunami.
If you are at home and hear there is a tsunami warning, you should make sure your entire family is aware of the warning. Prepare a family emergency plan beforehand so that everyone knows what to do.
