125 years of Indian pharma. One of the world’s largest digital archives built for any industry.

For over a century, generations of scientists, entrepreneurs and institutions have shaped an industry that transformed access to medicines, made a lasting contribution to global health and helped establish India as the Pharmacy of the World.

At the @IIMAhmedabad Healthcare Summit in Ahmedabad, Smt. @AnupriyaSPatel , Union Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilisers, launched the India Pharma Archives, the first publicly accessible digital platform capturing 125 years of India's pharmaceutical journey.

Developed by IIM Ahmedabad Archives in collaboration with the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, the initiative brings together the breadth and depth of the industry’s history in one place. Also present were Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Shri Manoj Joshi, Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, along with industry leaders and academicians.

The archive traces India’s pharmaceutical journey from its early beginnings to its emergence as a global pharmaceutical powerhouse, bringing together stories, milestones, people, companies, documents and historical resources.

At its heart are oral histories capturing the lived experiences of first-generation founders and pioneers stories that have never before been documented.

Conceived as a living archive, it will continue to grow, enabling future generations of scientists, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders to learn from and build on the people, ideas and milestones that shaped Indian pharma.

From generics to novel therapies: India's next chapter in life sciences is taking shape

At TPCI's India IP Advantage Summit 2026, Archana Jatkar, Associate Secretary General, Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, joined the discussion on "From Research to Market: Building India's Life Sciences IP Advantage" to talk about the opportunities and challenges shaping India's life sciences sector.

The conversation looked at what it will take for Indian pharma to build on its strength as the world's pharmacy and move further into complex generics, biosimilars, and novel therapies, along with the policy and IP reforms needed to support greater innovation, R&D, and investment in the sector.

As India builds on its role as the Pharmacy of the World to become a global life sciences innovation hub, this is exactly the kind of dialogue that will shape the path forward.

IPA × ISRO: Exploring the Next Frontier in Pharmaceutical Innovation

The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) was proud to participate in the National Workshop on Microgravity Research, hosted by ISRO at its headquarters in Bengaluru. The workshop, which marked one year of India's landmark International Space Station mission, was inaugurated by Dr. V. Narayanan, Chairman, ISRO and Secretary, Department of Space, and brought together Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, policymakers, scientists, academia and industry leaders to explore how microgravity research can drive scientific advancement and economic value for the nation.

Speaking at the workshop, Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General, IPA, said: "The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance will be keen to collaborate with ISRO to utilise space-based platforms for pharmaceutical research. Space research is a strategic area for the nation with significant future opportunities."

Shridhar Narayanan, Senior Advisor (Innovation), IPA, added: "Microgravity research has the potential to accelerate breakthroughs in areas such as protein crystallisation, advanced drug delivery and next-generation biologics. By bringing together the strengths of ISRO, research institutions and the pharmaceutical industry, we can build an ecosystem that drives innovation, strengthens India's scientific leadership and delivers better health outcomes for the world."

As India's pharmaceutical sector evolves from manufacturing excellence to innovation leadership, collaborations between the space and life sciences ecosystems can unlock transformative opportunities, shaping the future of healthcare.

Every day, viral hepatitis claims more than 3,500 lives worldwide, even though effective vaccines, treatments and, in the case of Hepatitis C, a cure exist.

The challenge is not a lack of science. It is ensuring that people are diagnosed early and have access to timely, quality care.

India is addressing this through Universal Hepatitis B immunisation, the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program, and expanded access to affordable, quality-assured medicines.
