Can uncertainty generated by negotiations help explain the economically concentrating effects of trade agreements? In our new publication with @BobbyGulotty, we find that negotiation-driven uncertainty while a burden to some firms, can be a boon to others. Out now:
Preferential Trade agreements, like NAFTA, introduce all sorts of regulations to keep out foreign producers. In a new publication with @ipekcinar_ic we show how this ends up benefiting the largest producers. Available now here: https://t.co/hmVwAivkac
What an unexpected lift in the spirits of democracy supporters in Turkey (and worldwide)! While the results are not directly comparable to 2023 presidential election due to a drop in participation (a still high 77% vs 87%), the victory of the opposition is clear.
Turkey's main opposition party managed to defeat the ruling alliance, delivering the biggest election defeat of Erdogan's career. Despite an uneven playing field, gov't candidates have lost even in conservative strongholds. This is CHP's best results since the 1977 elections.
Drone footage, taken shortly after the earthquake in Turkey, shows the ruins of what used to be a vibrant main corridor in the heart of Antakya’s Old City. The New York Times overlaid building facades from Google Maps to show what was lost. https://t.co/RzMdCepHqN
Please consider donating to One Rent, One Home to provide rent support for those who lost their homes in the Kahramanmaraş earthquake. Many thanks to @FukuyamaFrancis for his support. Feel free to share it.

The list of students and teachers who lost their lives in only one educational institution in only one of the ten cities devastated by earthquakes in Turkey. Kids from pre-school to high school. “Ve ailesi” means “and family”. The scale of this tragedy is beyond comprehension.
I'll start the international politics lesson in the next tweet. But many people are suffering due to the earthquake. If you wish to help, consider donating to one of the many NGOs providing assistance, such as @AKUT_Dernegi.

For some perspective, American friends can imagine 9/11. That disaster directly impacted New Yorkers—who, in 2001, comprised 1 in 35 Americans.
5x that # in 🇹🇷 (1 in 7 ppl) are directly impacted by this week’s earthquake.
Good 🧵 on scale of grief this catastrophe has caused:
YES PLEASE USE OUR MISERY, THOUSANDS OF DEATHS, DESTROYED FAMILIES FOR YOUR EXOGENOUS SHOCK AND IDENTIFICATION STRATEGY. WRITE MANY ECONOMETRICAS USING THE DATA OF PEOPLE YOU DON’T CARE ABOUT. SHAME ON YOU.
Anyone familiar with democratic backsliding in Turkey may be wondering where to donate. Two NGOs suggested by
@ipekcinar_ic, my collaborator and friend are AKUT https://t.co/pOiXjm8aYR and AHBAP https://t.co/yBOgur1HRO. I used the first with cc. It was easy. Spread the word!
Erdogan’s enraged face says so much.
He hasn’t visited the deprem bölgesi (earthquake zone) to empathise, apologise for Turkish state’s clear failures (in planning & construction regulation) or applaud responders.
Instead he sits in Ankara, threatening those who dare criticise
The earthquake that hit Turkey directly affected over 13 million people. Sitting this far away, where life isn't even bothered, knowing everyone is in shock, where I call home, is devastating. Please, if you have the means, consider donating: https://t.co/crpTqbdgt4
My home country Turkey was hit by a catastrophic earthquake. Currently, 5600+ buildings have collapsed in the region, and there are many people under the ruins that are waiting to be rescued.

A dark day in Turkey. Much of the Southeast is reduced to rubble. Death toll at >1000 and expected to rise.
My family and friends in Turkey are safe, but scared.
If you wish to help, this is the NGO I donated to:
