Using directed evolution, we discovered RNA enzymes (ribozymes) that catalyze RNA ligation with absolute specificity for RNA sequences terminating in a 3′-phosphate - a molecular signature of broken RNAs.
This chemistry had more stoppage time than expected⚽️. Our supramolecular polymers disassemble with trichloroacetic acid, pause in an unexpected acid–anion state, and then reassemble once that “transient” state decarboxylates—with help from added anions.

Things changed drastically when our research proved it was possible!
We demonstrated the first 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 and 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲-𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 brain implants creating unprecedented 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧-𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬.
We went on to receive the #NIH 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫’𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 with the highest and rarely achieved impact score. The NIH official review statement called our technology “𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞” & with “𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐞𝐫𝐚”
This technology has garnered many prestigious awards since then.
Through the hardest moments, my father’s teachings gave me indomitable strength:

Imagine a smartwatch that keeps track of important cells in your blood all day long. Our recent paper introduces #CircTrek - a wearable device that can detect the faintest signals from even a single circulating cell trekking through the blood vessels. This technology creates a new horizon for health monitoring, early disease detection as well as assessing treatments of deadly diseases such as cancer.
