London born, now live in Suffolk. Part time novelist, blogger. Like views that don't tick received left/right boxes. Don't always agree with people I follow.
@edbroom Fairly high up on the other side of this building can be seen a solitary white brick in among the other bricks. This was placed there in the 1930s to commemorate a workman who fell to his death from that point during construction.
@JeffHiggott@edbroom You never know if a queue is going down because calls are being answered or because other people get tired of waiting and give up. I'm beginning to think that at my GP surgery there's no-one at all at the other end.
@cusackandrew But following the expulsion of most ethnic Germans from Silesia, Pomerania and East Prussia after WWII, much of the western part was repopulated by Poles who once lived in the Eastern territories absorbed by the USSR. Few would have had ancestors who lived in the German Empire.
@VanishedLondon After graduating in the mid 1970s I was interviewed for a job at Foyles. Christina Foyle presided and asked me about my History degree. I did not get the job. I later heard anecdotally that she preferred non-graduates and people with poor English, as they were more compliant.
@BBCNews In 1971 I and a friend invaded Czechoslovakia too. We were walking on the Polish side of the Tatra mountains and saw the marker. A Czech and a Polish soldier were chatting and let us cross over for a few minutes in return for a British cigarette each.
