IMHO, Zorn's appointment has real echoes of Thurgood Marshall - who skillfully fought the US government in SCOTUS for decades (most famously in Brown v. Board) to end Jim Crow - before LBJ appointed him SG, then to SCOTUS & he advanced the cause from within the system.
