As City Council's Housing Chair, I've made it a priority to crack down on landlords who think they can scam their tenants and get away with it.
Junk fees belong in the trash and I stand in solidarity with tenants in our community who are unionizing against this predatory practice.
We can't forget that we're talking about people's homes. And home is where we go to feel safe, protected, and calm.
Thank you to the @PhillyDSA Citywide Tenants Union, the Emerson and Florence Garden Tenants Union, @RuePhilaCouncil@NicORourkePHL and everyone coming together against these junk fees!
Leaked video from inside ICE detention shows women trapped in desperate conditions—smuggled out by husband.
Used panties, moldy food, broken shoes, clothes that don't fit because made for men—and a toxic mattress made of insulation.
Gabriela Sousa came to U.S. legally granted humanitarian parole from Venezuela—and is married to U.S. citizen husband.
Her husband helped the women smuggle out this video they made—with testimonials from several women detained together in these inhumane conditions
The video was made secretly inside the Baker County ICE Detention Center in Macclenny, Florida.
@elmaoist @Leahfsw @mateosfo I have not only read the bill text but also worked on tenant protection laws to clean up how poorly the tenant parts of it were conceived of. As has Leah, who you initially responded to.
Our records show we have now raised over $80,000 since June of this year that has gone directly to Palestinians in GZ ☺️ This does not include our bookstore sales, which have sent at least $20,000 to Muni Gaza! Help us keep going: https://t.co/AaUqnQ1tWh
For ten months, @USC has refused to acknowledge the ongoing genocide in Gaza. In April they called the police to brutalize their students for speaking out. Since then, they have tried to repress student organizing by subjecting over 70 students to sham disciplinary actions. 🧵
We at ACCE have put out a statement regarding the news of @CAGovernor@GavinNewsom ordering the sweep of homeless encampments across CA.
Please read & remember that he is yet to complete his promise of 1 million homes that would have helped many get off the streets ⛺️⛈
@DarwinBondGraha Reminiscent of the city council meeting last year where a landlord group heckled students who came to speak at council (on an item unrelated to theirs). Probably a lot of overlap there.
Earlier this year, Target said it was closing 9 stores in 4 states because theft and organized retail crime had made them too dangerous to run.
But a @CNBC investigation found the closed locations generally saw fewer reported crimes than others nearby. https://t.co/lMxfkUElLk

HAPPENING NOW: A US militarily vessel destined to take military equipment to Israel is currently at the Port of Oakland. Communities currently protesting and we call on everyone to come out to the port to say enough is enough. No more US weapons to Israel for genocide!
Aljazeera says phone and internet lines in Gaza have gone dark. Unable to reach their reporters.
People on here with family in Gaza saying they've suddenly lost contact as well.
Coinciding with massive airstrikes over the last 20 minutes.
New: A security guard is suing Dallas cops who mistook him for a suspect with a similar name when he was getting food for his kids in 2021. Officers pushed and knelt on him as he screamed for help.
After realizing their mistake, police still arrested him.

this questioning of death stats from gaza is not only disgustingly racist, it also obscures the basic logic on the ground:
like so many other things, the registration of deaths is ultimately controlled by israel.
The U.N. reports at least 42% of Gaza's housing units are damaged or destroyed. One-point-four million Gazans — or more than half of the territory's population — have been displaced.
