🛑@Europarl_EN fails to stop harmful hydropower project endangering local communities and wildlife. The hazardous Turnu Măgurele–Nikopol hydropower project on the Lower Danube remained on the EU's priority investment list, despite the fact that it will:

🏠increase flood risk for over 100 towns and villages
🐟threaten protected areas and the survival of critically endangered species
❌is in contradiction to the EU's own policies.

⚠️WWF, @ceebankwatch, and multiple environmental organisations across the continent urgently call on the @EU_Commission to remove this project from its list of priority renewable energy projects.

🚨 BREAKING: EU countries agreed to adopt the Commission's proposal to lower the wolf's protection status.

Instead of looking for solutions, such as investing more in preventive measures to achieve coexistence, the EU chooses to allow wolf hunting...

A shameful day for the EU.

⚠️Devastating hydropower project listed for priority EU investment despite major social, economic, and environmental concerns. WWF, CEE Bankwatch Network and 36 other environmental organizations across Europe urge EU decision makers to withdraw support for the Turnu Măgurele - Nikopol hydropower dam on the Lower Danube.

The project planned for the Lower Danube in Romania and Bulgaria is likely to:
🏠entail relocation of thousands of citizens and port infrastructure

🍅 disrupt agricultural production, fisheries, inland waterway transport, and tourism, and pose risks to the nuclear power plant in Kosloduy.

🐟 poses a critical threat to a string of protected areas as well as to migratory fish such as the iconic Danube sturgeons, teetering on the brink of extinction.

⚖️ violates key environmental commitments and EU legislation, such as the Habitats Directive and the Water Framework Directive

We have urged the European Parliament to ask for a two-months extension of the scrutiny period of the delegated act of the European Commission, which adds the project to the priority EU investment list.

This extension would allow the European Parliament to properly assess the impacts of this project. 🔴 If not, the delegated act will enter into force on 24 September.

Project approval would undermine the EU's commitment to biodiversity protection and climate resilience, setting a dangerous precedent for future infrastructure developments.

🗺️ The #StrongForSturgeon adventure of Bob Kreiken continues.
Like the sturgeons, who hatch in the Danube, migrate to the Black Sea to spend several years before they mature and migrate back to the spawning places in the river Bob will cover the remaining 2550 km by kayak.🛶 🚵

⏰ The deadline for the National Energy and Climate Plans are approaching fast. #NECPs

🔌Member States are implementing the new Renewable Energy Directive, but #bioenergy rules are still too loose

🪵To ensure genuine climate benefits, they must apply stricter conditions at national level

🐟 This week, just a few days before #DanubeDay, the largest mobile aquarium in Europe made its appearance in Vienna, showcasing an array of Danube fish, including the majestic #sturgeon.

🌎This event is part of the EU-funded #LIFEBoat4Sturgeon project, aimed at conserving these remarkable fish species. The project, in which WWF is actively involved, represents a significant step towards protecting these ancient creatures that have outlasted the dinosaurs but are now threatened by human activity. Until 2030 1.6 million sturgeons will be released as part of this project.

🙏Special thanks to our WWF sturgeon expert, Jutta Jahrl, for sharing some pictures from her visit at the aquarium.
