African architectural student Bendera Abekyamwale (25) was told to “stop selling poison to children” after gardaí raided his Monaghan home and found him with thousands of euros worth of drugs and cash.
On March 13 last year, officers searched the African national’s residence at The Oaks, Lough Na Glack, Carrickmacross, recovering over €4,000 of cannabis herb and nearly €1,400 in cash.
His phone showed evidence of drug dealing.
Abekyamwale, who moved to Ireland as a child, pleaded guilty at Monaghan District Court to possession of drugs for sale or supply, money laundering, and cannabis for personal use.
He had no prior convictions.
Judge Raymond Finnegan strongly criticised him, asking: “What have you got to say for yourself ruining lives with your poison?
How many lives have you ruined and how many suicides have you caused?” The judge accused the African student of being in it purely for a “handy buck” and lacking compassion.
Defence solicitor Roísín Courtney noted his ties to the area, studies in architectural technology, and a summer job at a local renewable energy firm, attributing the offending to financial difficulties.
Judge Finnegan handed down two consecutive five-month suspended prison sentences (total 10 months) and a €500 fine.
He warned Abekyamwale to stop selling poison to children, stating he would serve the full term if he reoffends.
No mention of deportation was made by the judge.

At the RDS count centre, Matt Treacy and Ben Scallan discuss the tallies for the Dublin Central by-election so far.
Matt says that Fine Gael and Fianna Fail's result is so poor that in any other European country the party leaders would be forced to resign.
Tallies indicate that Fianna Fáil are currently on track to receive their worst constituency results ever in both the Galway West and Dublin Central by-elections:
