This week marks 29 years since Ireland hosted the Under-16 European Championships. It was an Irish team which exited at the group stage as they faced high-calibre opposition in the shape of Czechslovakia, England and Portugal. However, the team came within 90 seconds of beating England at Tolka Park courtesy of a Brian Frawley goal. A number of the squad members would go on to backbone Brian Kerr’s Under-20 squad which came third at the World Cup in Malaysia three years later.
The tournament also coincided with Ireland’s annual hosting of the Eurovision Song Contest - a night on which Charlie McGettigan and Paul Harrington performed ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids’ and some dance group called Riverdance announced its arrival! The country was also gripped with World Cup fever with only seven weeks until Big Jack’s team took on the mighty Italians at the Giant’s Stadium. ☘️ #greenshoots
