Join us at the Interactive Robotics Lab! With an over 1.5:1 robot-to-human ratio, we build real robots and test them in challenging physical environments.
Following the massive success of #wvurobotics at the international University Rover Challenge (URC), WVU URC team captain, Stephen Jacobs, a former IRL Graduate Researcher, has been recruited by @SpaceX for their @SpaceXStarship project!
Congratulations Stephen! Lets gooo!
Let’s gooo!! Amazing result for #wvurobotics !!! 1st place in this high profile international competition!
Huge congratulations to @irl_wvu Yu Gu and all the talented and hardworking students from WVU MAE and LCSEE @wvustatler
The IRL is proud of Jonas Bredu for the successful defense of his masters thesis in mechanical engineering: "Development of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle and Implementation of an Autonomous Navigation Module in a Mine Environment"
Well done, Jonas!
@BreduJonas
Congratulations to the IRL's very own Dr. Nick Ohi on his successful dissertation defense today!
Dr. Ohi gave his opening presentation to a packed room and we are all very proud of his achievement!
IRL welcomes Nathaniel "Nate" Pearson!
Nate is a new Computer Engineering PhD and enjoys hiking, robots, cooking, and riding his electric unicycle around campus.
He is interested in researching methods for meaningful spatial representation and how robots can be made to learn.
The IRL welcomes new PhD student Madhav Rijal!
Madhav joined the lab in 2022 as a Mechanical Engineering PhD student and we look forward to working with him!

The IRL welcomed Michael Butts at the beginning of the Fall semester:
Michael is working towards his Masters of Electrical Engineering and looks forward to working with the IRL!
Welcome new Graduate Students!
Trevor Smith has been with IRL for a minute now, but he became one of our graduate students in 2022!

2020-2022, pandemic, but several big robots got designed and built
2022, six new grad students joined IRL, working on cool new projects.
Aug 2022, a new decade, theme: "in real life!"
As of this August IRL is celebrating its ten year anniversary! Lots of things have happened in the last decade:
Aug 2012, beginning of IRL (Interactive Robotics Lab)
...
Sep 2017, collaborating with JPL on rover Fast Traverse research, working on decision making under uncertainty problems. 6 IRL members worked at JPL for 10 weeks each.
Mar 2019, started NSF REU program, and swarm robotics.
May 2019, NASA NIAC award on planetary mission design
