There is a lot of talk about the history of Western imperialism, but not much about Russian imperialism, because Russia did not portray its expansion as conquest, but incorporated conquered territories as part of Russia right away. @LauriMalksoo#LennartMeriConference
I guess a lot of us need to vent today. Let's vent with the best ventilator - rage donations to Ukrainian army. Drop the campaigns that need attention and I will add them to this thread.
And don't be shy, money hits hard.
This meme actually unfolding on Twitter right now over that NYT article on Girkin.
For anyone still confused about why it was bad, let me try and break it down.
A standard principle of news journalism is to prioritise key details most relevant to the story. (The opposite is called “burying the lede”.)
Girkin is a mass murdering terrorist responsible for blowing a packed civilian airliner out of the sky while a commander during russia’s war against Ukraine, which started in 2014.
So for the NYT to introduce him as a Kremlin critic and not even bury the lede by mentioning key details further down in the article is seriously strange from a journalistic perspective. It’s like referring to Osama as the Saudi regime critic.
But this is about something much deeper than a lapse in journalistic norms.
Overlooking russia’s atrocities and normalising people who commit them reflects a russian imperialist mindset.
And that reflects a much wider problem at publications like the NYT being too easily duped by Kremlin narratives. A key part of that has been the Kremlin’s absolutely absurd denial that russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, which a lot of international reporters treated way too credibly.
And that ties directly back to what the NYT is omitting in this latest Girkin article by ignoring his role in russia’s war that began in 2014.
And all this is very obvious to millions of people who neighbour russia even before we realised the article was written by a Russian Moscow correspondent with a history of deeply russian chauvinist views and associations.
And it’s shocking that we have to explain to journalists the very basics of journalism and the importance of incorporating the perspectives of people experiencing russian aggression when writing about russian aggression.
Märt Sults Postimehes: Lugedes Eesti Keele Instituudi keelereformist jooksevad judinad üle selja. Tekib küsimus, kas eesti keel on mingi sõgeda seltskonna jaoks kohandatud suhtlusvorm.

No, Putin was not “provoked” to unleash missile terror by “Crimea Bridge”. Russia had been constantly hitting Ukraine with missiles before the bridge, too. Putin is desperate because of battlefield defeats and uses missile terror to try to change the pace of war in his favor 1/2
Those who propose Ukraine to give up on its people and land — presumably not to hurt Putin’s bruised ego or to save Ukraine from suffering — must stop using word “peace” as an euphemism to “let Russians murder and rape thousands more innocent Ukrainians, and grab more land”.
A short reminder for journalists:
❌Pro-Russian separatists -✅Russian occupation authorities
❌Referendum -✅Fake Referendum
❌Separatist leaders - ✅Collaborationists, ✅Russia-installed occupation administration
❌ Joining Russia -✅ Annexation by Russia
Khm, @DelfiEE Naisi ei peksta surnuks, sest tülitseti, isegi allikmaterjal ei kasuta sellist väljendusviisi. Kui on vaja “sest” osa lisada, on ainus õige jätk siiski “sest Mihhail on probleemne värdjas”
Gorbachev accepted the collapse of the outer Soviet empire as well as the reunification of Germany - which was huge - but he agreed to sending the tanks into Vilnius and Riga to stop the independence of the Baltic nations.
