Uganda’s pineapple industry is set to earn millions of dollars from exports as the country breaks into the massive Chinese market with its first-ever shipment of canned pineapples.
Uganda already exports fresh pineapples to Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia, but China is now emerging as the biggest opportunity after receiving the country's inaugural shipment of 104 metric tonnes of canned pineapple.
Backed by a $220 million agricultural investment and a factories capable of processing 800 tonnes of pineapples daily, Uganda is moving from selling raw fruit to exporting value-added products to one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
Ugandan pineapples, famous for their exceptional sweetness and quality, are increasingly being recognized among the best tropical fruits in the world.
