In 2022, Yoolwxnder sent me a DM about a new K-pop group he thought I should collaborate with. I checked out the video and thought it was cool, but I didn’t think much of it at the time (it turned out to be “Hype Boy”—safe to say I was sleeping lol). Fast forward to 2023: I’m on tour, and my DJ keeps playing the same song before my set. Every time I hear it, I get instantly hooked, so I ask him, “What song is that?” He tells me it’s NewJeans’ “ETA.” I’m like, “Oh okay, I love that song.”

Then the next night, the same thing happens. I hear it from the dressing room and go, “Yo… what song is that again, bro?” And once again, it’s “ETA.” This went on for about five nights in a row before I finally said to myself, “Alright, I really need to check them out for real.” When I did, I was blown away by their sound and visuals. They quickly became my favorite musical discovery of 2023.

The craziest part is that about two weeks after I “discovered” them, I ended up performing with NewJeans in Seoul at the 2023 Worlds Ceremony for Riot Games’ League of Legends tournament. The timing was hilarious to me, because I had known early in the year that I’d be performing at that show, but I didn’t really know who NewJeans were back then, so I hadn’t thought much of it. That experience pretty much turned me into a full-on superfan.

Toward the end of 2023 and throughout 2024, I worked on a remix set where I took their songs and added my own vocals and ideas. Along the way, I discovered so many dope producers... without them, the set would’ve been maybe 15 minutes long. That was actually my original plan, but I kept finding remixes I loved. I’d reach out to the producers, ask them to send me the beats, and what started as a short idea slowly turned into a full hobby.

It’s been really sad to watch everything the group has been going through over the past almost two years. I hope they’re able to come back strong and whole, because their presence in the game is definitely missed.
