There was a woman in my neighborhood growing up. Let us call her Madame Nnenna.

She was the type of woman who knew everyone’s business. Not in a nosy way, but in that caring aunty way. She watched me grow up, always checking on me, asking about school.

When I got into medical school, she threw a party for the whole street. ‘This boy is going to be our doctor,’ she’d say proudly. ‘He will take care of all of us.

Years later, she became my patient after she came in complaining of unusual bleeding and pain.

When the results came back, my heart sank. Cervical cancer. Advanced stage. She was in a polygamous home, had symptoms for months but didn’t want to waste money on hospital. By the time she came to see me

It had already spread. We lost her a few months later.

At her funeral, I couldn’t stop thinking: this could have been prevented. And here’s what breaks me - most people don’t even know how.

By age 45, 4 out of every 5 people will have had HPV - the virus that causes cervical cancer.

You can’t tell by looking at someone. In most people, the body clears it.

But in some women, it stays, changes cells in the cervix, and becomes cancer. #Cervicalcancer kills one woman every two minutes.

But the good news is that there’s a vaccine that prevents up to 90% of all cervical cancer cases.

The HPV vaccine is free for girls between 9-14 years. Older women can take it too. And it’s available at Primary Healthcare Centres nationwide. This vaccine is keeping mothers, sisters, daughters alive and thriving.

So you reading this…what can you do right now?

Talk to your healthcare provider about the HPV vaccine for the girls in your life between ages 9-14. If you or your adolescent daughter haven’t taken it, visit the Primary Healthcare Centre closest to you.

And for adults, please get a Pap smear test done every 3 years.

All you need is one vaccine to give you 90% protection. It’s that simple.
