It's a common tactic in reformed theology and all forms of preterism to use Joshua 21:43-45 as a prooftext to say that the Land Covenant has already been fulfilled
Aside from the fact that there are other key factors that go into the Land Covenant that these views overlook
And the fact that there are few things in the Bible that should be taken more seriously than when God Himself Swears on Oath about something
Joshua 21 does not contain the slam dunk that they claim it does, and I think they end up walking straight into a bear trap of their own making that causes them more harm than good when you realize what comes before and after Joshua 21
Allow me to explain
If you back up 10 chapters you'll notice this 👇
Joshua 11:23
"SO JOSHUA TOOK THE ENTIRE LAND, JUST AS THE LORD HAD DIRECTED MOSES, and he gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal divisions. Then the land had rest from war"
Sounds great on paper, til you keep reading
Joshua 13:1
"When Joshua had grown old, the Lord said to him, “You are now very old, AND THERE ARE STILL VERY LARGE AREAS OF LAND TO BE TAKEN OVER"
Then you run into this a couple chapters later
Joshua 15:63
"Judah could not dislodge the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; TO THIS DAY THE JEBUSITES LIVE THERE WITH THE PEOPLE OF JUDAH"
The phrase "to this day" is very important because it's saying that this is how it was at the time the Book of Joshua was written
Which includes Joshua 21
Joshua 16:10
"They did not dislodge the Canaanites living in Gezer; TO THIS DAY the Canaanites live among the people of Ephraim but are required to do forced labor"
Another reference like the previous chapter
Can you spot the pattern?
Joshua did not take possession of the entire Land, despite Joshua 11 saying that he took possession of the entire Land
If you never read Joshua before let alone much of the Old Testament, and someone preached Joshua 21:43-45 to you in pure isolation, suggesting that the Promised Land is irrelevant and that Covenant was fulfilled thousands of years ago and expanded to the rest of the world, you'd have a better chance than not of falling for it hook, line, and sinker, and that tactic has been used for years to lead people away from the truth and into the deception of reformed eschatology and preterism
What's crazy is that we haven't even gotten to the stuff that comes after Joshua 21
Joshua 23 starts like this
"AFTER A LONG TIME HAD PASSED and the Lord had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then a very old man"
Which reads like a sequel to Joshua 21:43-45 and if you read them in parallel you can tell that Joshua 23 comes many years after Joshua 21
Joshua 23:2-5
"and [Joshua] said to them:
“I am very old. You yourselves have seen everything the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the Lord your God who fought for you. Remember how I have allotted as an inheritance for your tribes all the land of the nations that remain—the nations I conquered—between the Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea in the west. THE LORD YOUR GOD HIMSELF WILL PUSH THEM OUT FOR YOUR SAKE. HE WILL DRIVE THEM OUT BEFORE YOU, AND YOU WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF THEIR LAND, AS THE LORD YOUR GOD PROMISED YOU"
To suggest that Joshua 21:43-45 somehow fulfills the entirety of the Land Covenant not only contradicts the rest of Joshua, but it makes no sense when you get to the Book of Judges and the Tribes of Israel are failing to possess their alotted territories
When something appears crystal clear, but everything around it seems to suggest otherwise, it might not be the slam dunk it appears to be
Especially when it's coming from someone who represents preterism or covenant theology
I've said this before, and I'll say it a thousand times if I have to
Eschatology is one of the Achilles Heels of reformed theology
And until they practice what they preach and "semper reformanda" becomes more than a buzzword, that will never change
Long story short...
God has big plans for the Promised Land 👇
