But soon I grew far more interested in novel-writing than in poetry, especially after a minor obsession with Joyce and Kafka.

When I was thirteen or so, a friend introduced me for the first time to iambic pentameter. (We were pretty nerdy.)

It took me a long time just to understand the concept of meter! (Before that, I was just counting syllables...)

So why was I drawn to it?

...I kept a copy of the Waste Land and the Four Quartets on my bedstand and practically memorized them, I was reading them so much. (My parents looked at the poems and said: "what a bunch of crazy writing...")

It launched me into a full-blown modernist phase.
