Note: Lower salaries do not necessarily equate to lower living standards. Sri Lanka stands out as one of the most affordable countries in terms of average living costs when measured in USD.
Almost a decade ago (2013-2014), @dialoglk introduced a Prepaid Travel Card known as the "Touch Travel Card." This card was designed with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, enabling users to conveniently pay for their transport fares.
⭕️ Initially, it was operational in the Western province on Routes 138, 122, 177, and some parts of the Central province.
⭕️ For a certain period, the card functioned effectively. However, some conductors began to refuse acceptance of the card, and the locations for card reloads disappeared over time. As a testament to this project, you can still find buses today with the Touch logo stickers affixed to them.
⭕️ During its launch, as a promotional offer, the cardholders enjoyed a 20% discount on bus fares.
⭕️ This initiative was likely ahead of its time for Sri Lanka, While discussions about similar innovative systems have surfaced, none have materialized so far.
The Ministry of Transport should seriously consider embracing solutions like this to digitize the ticket issuance process. Such an approach would not only empower tighter control over concerns such as skimming and fraud but also pave the way for a notably more convenient public transport experience for passengers.
